What you get depends on your choice. Take a 12-page PDF: keep pages 3 to 5 and you get a 3-page file. Split every page out, and you end up with 12 PDFs of one page each. In both cases the original 12-page file is left as it was

Split a PDF into Multiple Files

Common jobs

Separate the pages you need

A long file often holds several separate things: an invoice tucked inside a bank statement, one chapter of a textbook, or the signed page of a contract. Splitting a PDF file into pieces goes faster if you already know the start page and end page of every piece. Then run the split once for each part you need.
  • Pulling one receipt out of a scanned bundle
  • Sending a single chapter to a classmate instead of the whole book
  • Splitting a long report into sections, one per team or reader
Plan your split

Note page numbers first

Before splitting, note the start and end page for each part you need. That makes it easier to select the right sections.

Tip: Open the PDF in your viewer first and note the page numbers. That is faster than guessing.

Before You Split: A Quick Check

  • Unlock password-protected PDFs

A locked PDF needs to be unlocked before it can be split.

  • Note the page numbers

Write down the start and end page of each part you want to create.

  • Check the page count

A one-page PDF cannot be divided into smaller page sections.

Quick troubleshooting

If Something Looks Off

The wrong pages came out

Check the page numbers against your PDF viewer and run the split again. Your original file remains unchanged.

My file will not open in the tool

The PDF may be damaged or locked. Save a fresh, unlocked copy from the program that created it and try again.

The file is too big to add

Files above 300 MB can’t be added. If yours is bigger, shrink it with a compress tool first, then split the smaller copy. Compress PDF.
